CHEMISTRY WORKSHOP: Energy & Changes in Matter - A Coherent Approach for Middle and High School
WORKSHOP LEADERS: Donghong Sun, Patricia Bauer, and Rachel Ward (Trinity School, Marymount School, and Staten Island Academy, respectively)
DESCRIPTION: Energy is one of the central themes in science classrooms. The connection between energy and changes in matter is a fundamental concept in chemistry. However, energy is usually introduced and taught as an isolated concept in most middle school and high school chemistry courses. In this workshop, we will demonstrate, through a simple experiment, how to guide students to reach deep conceptual understanding by relating energy storage and transfer to changes in matter at both the observable and the particulate levels. We will also introduce energy bar charts, which are an effective tool to visually track energy storage and transfer, further assisting their conceptual understanding of the relationship between energy and changes in matter.
Participants in this workshop will be collecting data, taking part in post-lab discussions, and practicing solving energy problems in STUDENT mode, followed by TEACHER-mode discussions on how to implement this approach in the classroom with students.
- Chemistry, general science, and physical science teachers with middle or high school students.
- Students who are interested in becoming STEM teachers or engaged in preparing to be STEM teachers.
- Elementary school teachers who are interested gaining deeper understanding of this topic and in being better equipped to stimulate students' thinking and analysis of scientific phenomena

Is there a fee to attend this workshop?
Yes. There is a $15 attendance fee plus a $1.29 registration fee.
Is there a special pricing for TC students for this workshop?
Yes. Teachers College students receive a 50% discount on STEMteachersNYC workshops. To receive your discount code, please send an email to STEMteachersNYC Registrar (Registration@STEMteachersNYC.org). You will be asked to present a current TC student card at the door on the day of the workshop.

Is the reservation fee refundable?
No, please be sure you are able to attend the workshop prior to registering for it. The reservation fee is not refundable. If you mistakenly register for 2 workshops that take place at the same time, we will not be able to refund the fee. If you must cancel, please let us know as early as possible by sending email to Registrar (Registration@STEMteachersNYC.org).
